Education, especially of women who constitute nearly fifty per cent of society, is essential for the development of the society as well as the country. Considering its importance since independence Government through various five year plans have undertaken several measures. Many Commissions and Committees have recommended for its development. But nevertheless it is in a backward state. At this juncture the present work is the outcome of research studies of many educationists and social scientists which focuses on the extent of development of Women's Education at national as well as regional level, the inequality in the educational level of both the sexes in different spheres of society among different social groups. The study also points out the possible cases of backwardness of Women's Education, the emerging issues which stand on its way and suggests suitable measures for its future prospects. It is hoped that the study will be of immense value for the researchers. educationists, government, planners, policy makers and administrators for the development of society in general and women in particular through education.
