The Camp David Accords and the process of normalisation of relations between Egypt and Israel constitute a dividing line in contemporary West Asian History and politics. If the Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel helped to ease tension along the Red Sea it also led to the intensification of tensions between Israel and Syria and Egypt and other Arab States. Egypt which had till then been regarded as the leader of the Arabs and their spearhead in the struggle against Israel, found itself (until recently) isolated and even expelled from the Arab League. The volume comprises mostly of papers which were initially prepared for the National Seminar on West Asia Since Camp David, held at Aligarh, authors who are specialists in the field. In the light of the Seminar discussion. West Asia Since Camp David would have a special appeal and relevance for all those interested in West Asian history and politics. Besides being an up-to-date study. It provides a primarily third-world perspective on the situation and developments in West Asia after the Camp David Accords. In the context of the recent developments and changes many of the cherished hypotheses and generalizations about the West Asian conflict have either become inadequate or obsolete. To ensure that the subject-matter is communicated to and understood by the average university student as also by the inquisitive general reader, care has been taken to use simple language. This along with an analytical introduction adds to the utility of the book as it pertains to a theme which is not only of academic but of popular interest. It may also be prescribed as textbook for the Honours and Post-graduate courses on international politics.
