This volume on the ‘Tribal Languages of Himachal Pradesh’ is the second part of the volume II of the series Studies in Tibeto-Himalayan Languages. It contains a detailed structural analysis of 4 tribal languages of Himachal Pradesh, viz. Spitian, Nyamkad, Chhitkuli and Kanashi. The linguistic account presented in it is based on the first hand recording of it from the field itself by a trained linguist. This is the work in which these little known tribal languages have received an unprecedented exhaustive treatment. Like other volumes of this series, this volume too fulfills the longfelt necessity of having a fuller account of the Himalayan tongues which, on account of non-availability of sufficient reliable material, could not had in the L.S.I. Besides, it is also to pave a way for the understanding of the nature and inter-relationship of various tongues currently being spoken throughout the length and breadth of the Himalayan regions of India and neighbouring countries of this sub-continent. Moreover, this work has a potentiality of making a solid contribution to a few fresh areas of linguistic research, such as ‘Contact and ‘Convergence,’ ‘South-East Asia as a Linguistic Area,’ ‘Contribution of Austro-Asiatic Languages to the Formation of Tibeto-Himalayan Tongues’, Comparative Analyses of various Languages of the T.H. Group and of the languages of the major linguistic groups of the Indian subcontinent, etc. As such the importance of this work is self evident alike for the students and scholars of linguistics in particular, and of history, culture and anthropology in general.
