About the Book

The present volume on Tibeto-Himalayan Languages of Uttarakhand is the second part of the volume III of the series Studies in Tibeto-Himalayan Languages. The first of it is devoted to the Tibeto-Himalayan tribal languages viz., Darmiya, Chaudangsi-Byangsi and Johari of the Kumaun division of Uttarakhand, the three languages of the Rangkas group. The present volume contains a detailed account of the tribal dialects of the Jads and Tolchha-Marchhas, spoken in Uttarkashi and Chamoli districts of the Garhwal division, and of the Raji dialect of the forest dwellers of Pithoragarh district. Thus these two volumes are presenting for the first time, a comprehensive linguistic account of the tribal people of this region. The importance of the study of these tribal languages belonging to the western pronominalized group of the Himalayan regions needs no elaboration from the scholars of Indian Linguistics. As in other volumes, the Linguistics material presented in this volume too is a faithful account of the languages under consideration. The publication of this volume is not only to contribute to the fulfilling of the long standing need of a detailed linguistic survey of the Himalayas, but also to the understanding of the historical background of the speakers of these languages and their cultural ties with the other Himalayan tribes of this sub-continent. Besides, the linguistic analysis presented in this and other volumes, throws a fresh light on the linguistic aspect of contact and convergence that has been taking place in these regions among various linguistic groups in the past for time immemorial.
