About the Book

This is a pioneering research work. It deals with the board framework of inter-ethnic relationship between works and management on the one hand and workers and workers hailing from various migrant ethnic groups to tea industry of Arunachal Pradesn on the other. The work also deals with the issues on migration and social change, economic life and cultural integration in tea industry of the state of Arunachal Pradesh. Since this is the first Sociological study on tea plantation workers of the enchanted frontier of Arunachal Pradesh, it will be of immense help and guidance to the scholars and general readers who are interested to enrich their knowledge about the sociology of Indian Tea Industry in the near future.


Khemraj Sharma (b. 1957) earned his M.A. (Sociology & Social Anthropology) and Ph.D. degrees from the University of North Bengal, Darjeeling (West Bengal). At present, he is an Education Officer in the Central Board of Workers’ Education, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India, at Tinsukia (Assam). He has authored four books: Socio-Economic Life of Cinchona Plantation Workers in India (1997), Tea Industry in India: An Introduction (1999), The Himalayan Tea Plantation Workers in (2000) and Tea Plantation Workers in a Himalayan Region (2003). He has contributed twenty-eight academic articles to reputed journals and books on Social Anthropology. His areas of specialisation are: Plantation Workers in East/North-East India, Industrial Relations, Industrial Sociology and the Himalayan Society of North-East India. Presently, he is actively engaged in a research study on Globalisation and Tea Plantation Workers in Eastern Himalayas.
