Population Dynamics in Indian States focuses on several major determinants of fertility and infant mortality and their inter reationship. This book is divided into three parts on the basis of the above coverage. It is an outcome of a major and first national demographic study covering the important three natural regions of India, viz., North Central and Southern region representedly three states like U.P., A.P. and Kerala. A very large sample of 6500 have been covered under this study. In the analysis of data for the first time the most appropriate conceptual models and the most appropriate conceptual models and theoretical basis using path analysis have been adopted. Several important factors affecting family formation have been considered under Part I. They include; nuptiality, demographic variables, religion and value of children, socio-economic status, breast feeding, family planning, etc. In addition to this general analysis of fertility, a separate focussed analysis of determinants of completed fertility has also been carried out using path analysis technique; the direct and indirect effect of major determinants of fertility, and their order of importance have also been documented. Under Part II also the most appropriate and comprehensive ?life affecting variables? have been covered, beginning with the trends and differentials of mortality followed by socio-cultural situation, demographic factors, ecological variables, health and nutritional status of mothers and childrens, breast feeding, causes of death. This section also has a path analysis using the most appropriate variables. Part III deals with the interrelationship between fertility and mortality. It covers all the major factors and mortality. It covers all the major factors dealing with this theme. Another related sections on unwanted babies forms an innovation to this study. This book is unique in many respects. It is a rare book length study focussing on major determinants of fertility and mortality and their interrelationship among the same population. For the first time it has revealed that value of children is the principal determinant of high fertility. It is the only study that compared these vital events across the major three regions of India.
