About the Book

The book is an outcome of five years research registered in the University of Kalyani. It offers much greater scope than others for a great mind - a mind of both breadth and depth. It has unveiled the past, delves into present and visualize the future prospect of preservation of library materials including archival materials particularly in West Bengal. The Book examines various aspects of preservation and offers some practical guidelines. Its focus is preservation and access for if materials are collected, then neglected, they will not be available for present and future generations. It discusses' collection maintenance, ranging from good housekeeping practices to environmental controls. It examines problems with the variety of media, found in libraries and archives, including books, prints, manuscripts, photographs, slides, microforms, sound recordings, videotape and film, magnetic and electronic media. The book is intended to provide practical advice and guiding principles to help librarians and archivists, analyze their institutional operations and prepare programmes to meet the particular needs of their institutions.


Subhaluxmi Pattanayak was born (b.1962) in Kolkata and post-graduated in Comparative Literature and Library & Information Science from the jadavpur University. She has qualified the NET exam conducted by the UGC. She obtained her Ph.D. degree in Library & Information Science from the University of Kalyani. Presently she is attached with Geological Survey of India, Kolkata. She has several publications of journal articles to her credit.
