Br¯ahmo Sam¯aj, ?Society of God? was founded in 1828 by Raja Rammohan Roy to transform radically the face of social & religious life of Hindus. He intended the Sam¯aj to be a society of true worshippers of the one God for all religions. No images, statues or paintings were allowed in the hall of worship. No sacrifices or oblations of any kind were permitted, and only monotheistic services, prayers and hymns were allowed. An innovation was the introduction of congregational worship. Among the prominent persons who joined the Br¯ahmo Sam¯aj were Maharshi Devendernath Tagore, Kesav Chandra Sen, Pratapchandra Mazumdar, Sasipada Banerji, Ananda Mohan Bose and Pundit Sivanath Sastri. So the society gained strength and popularity among intellectuals for a considerable time. The book which was first published about seven decades ago, contains biographical notes and portraits of all the seven distinguished pioneers who not only confined the movement to the then Bengal but also spread it almost throughout India. It is undoubtedly a unique book which will be a precious acquisition to all libraries, public and private, particularly for its reference and research value.
