The present work is a case study of a project conducted by Miss Joshomayee Devi, faculty member, on behalf of the North Eastern Institute of Bank Management. The project was undertaken by the Institute as an assignment from the Industrial Development Bank of India. It makes an indepth study of the impact of industries on the social ecology of the tribal areas where industrial units have been located and draws important analytical conclusions. Though these conclusions particularly relate to the North Eastern Region, they are also applicable to other parts of the country with comparable eco-social systems. The book carries an insightful foreword by Prof. B.K. Roy Burman which brings to bear on the study. The benefits of his long experience of field work and vast knowledge of the sociological, anthropological and economic aspects of the development problems of the region.

 

The North Eastern Institute of Bank Management (NEIBM) was established in 1980 under the sponsorship of the State Bank of India, the United Bank of India and the UCO Bank, the lead banks of the North East region. Originally conceived as a joint training centre for new recruits and employees of banks, the scope and activities of NEIBM, as it stands today, are considerably wider. In collaboration with senior personnel from Government and financial institutions NEIBM conducts joint programmes for officers from different organisations and organises discussions and seminars on regional problems. It also undertakes studies on specific problems of the North Eastern region, particularly regarding to impact of development efforts. It has to its credit a number of valuable reports prepared on the subject. The present publication is one such.
