About the Book

A part of their process of evangelisation, the American Baptist Mission undertook various projects, secular in nature, such as, opening the schools for both boys and girls, constructing broading houses replacing the bachelors? Dormitory, drafting and printing school text books, translations and publications of Bible and religious Tracts into local languages, introduction of modern medicines, dispensaries and hospitals and undertaking many other philanthropic works wherever they established their Mission Stations. The volume deals with the manner in which these activities were carried out by the American Baptist Mission in different States of North-East India in historical perspective. Present Assam being the first State of their Missionary activity forms the first Chapter in which all these activities have been described. The remaining chapters contain descriptions of all these themes carried out by the mission in Garo Hills of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Manipur in chronological order of their occupation.


Dr. Milton S. Sangma obtained his M.A. Degree in History from Calcutta University and Ph.D. from Gauhati University. Currently a Professor in the Department of History, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, he also served the Union Christian College, Barapani as Lecturer and Head of the Department of History for a number of years. He has already a number of publications to his credit both in Garo language and in English. His books in English include History of American Baptist Mission in North-East India, Volume I. He has also edited a number of books in Garo and contributed a large number of articles in learned Journals and Magazines and presented many papers in seminars. He has visited France and U.K. and did extensive researches in Bibliotecque Nationale and National Archives in Paris and in the India Office Library and Records, London. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the North-East India History Association, the North –East India Council for Social Science Research, Shillong and ICSSR, Shillong. A member of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, he also served as a member of ICHR and is currently a member of the Advisory Committee of the “Towards Freedom” Project of the ICHR, New Delhi.
