About the Book

This book examines the nature, sources and implications of inequalities in opportunity for higher education in a metropolis. Its central theme is that higher education contrary to expectations, has not been contributing to upward social mobility; instead, it has been functioning as an instrument for status retention or as a status stabiliser in urban India. The book is based on data collected by the author through personal interviews with a sample of 344 students in four institutions of higher learning in Bangalore: an institute ‘deemed to be a university’, a few post-graduate science departments of Bangalore University, a private and a Government medical college. There are supplemented by a fund of secondary data and a comprehensive documentation of the available literature on the theme. Substantiely, the book encompasses such varied but interrelated themes as inequalities of educational opportunity, academic achievement, status aspirations, social mobility, occupational inbreeding, social implications of medical education, the policy of protective discrimination, and the ‘new education policy. “… the present study is specially commended for its forthright theoretical standpoint, ideological conviction and the comprehensive as well as systematic treatment of the problem under inquiry, namely, the restraining influence of stratification for the process of mobility specially in India and elsewhere too, where ‘liberal’ideology is dominant”, says Professor Y.B. N. Jayaram, M.A., Ph.D., (Born 1950) is Reader is Sociology at Bangalore University, Bangalore. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Department of Sociology, University of Surrey, England, in 1979 under the Younger Scientists’. Exchange Scheme sponsored by the University Grants Commission and the British Council. He has participated in several national and international seminars and conferences on sociology and education. He has many research papers to his credit, mainly in the areas of sociology or education and social stratification. His adaptation for Indian students of INTRODUCTORY SOCIOLOGY by Tony Bilton et al is shortly going to be published.
